Distribute Your Self-Published Book (Part 1)

Distribute Your Self-Published Book (Part 1) Judy Cullins c 2003 All Rights Reserved

Where is your book now? With a distributor? In a book store? Or, did it already die an early death after a few months?

New self-published authors often believe they need a distributor to sell a lot of books. They want to use Ingram or Baker & Taylor because they think they need to get their book into the “brick and mortar” bookstores like Barnes and Noble.

Authors go through many hoops and snags to accomplish this– what I call the “traditional publishing nightmare” of inefficiency and lack of support for authors. Usually the author only gets around 10% royalties and has to pay back all promotion expenses such as book signings. So many hoops, some give up. So many authors I speak with who have gone this route still have hundreds, even thousands of unsold copies littering up storage space. Talk about discouragement. Read the rest of this entry »

Ads Not Pulling? Don’t Blame the Publisher Yet! Ad Writer’s Tips

We all work hard to write that hot prospect pulling ad but many times we get little or no response at all. Publishers take alot of heat when it comes to this problem. Just the other day I listened as an ezine publisher told a story of a guy who wanted all his money back when his ad didn’t pull. Should the publisher give a refund? For many years I was an advertising consultant in the mail order industry. I heard so many people complain about how bad so and so publication was and how it didn’t pull any or very few responses.

Sometimes, people never consider that their ad may have been to blame for the outcome. As advertisers, we need to shoulder the responsiblity. We need to understand that to write ads that pull, means learning another profession or at least learning the bare basics so our advertising is not in vain. Read on and you can discover the ad writer’s formula used for decades by successful copywriters. First, think about words for a moment. Think about how powerful they can be. Words…. so powerful they can cause people to fight or a whole country to go to war. Read the rest of this entry »

Enhance Bookstore Prints to Boost Promotions

With hundreds of paperbacks up for sale in bookstores, promoting these products to target readers can be a challenge.  Your target market’s attention can be captured with conventional prints, but finding the same uses of other printing materials can capture customers and describe products better.

The wiser choice, when dealing with print materials will always be commercial printing.  Printing companies, especially online service providers, do not only serve as good reference for a wide selection of print products, design templates, online support, and fast delivery is at your convenience. Design Your Own Newspaper Ads

Many people in business lay-out (design) their own ads. That old adage “If It Is To Be It Is Up To Me” prevails. Do it yourself and you may get what you want. Many newspaper salespeople are poor at conveying customer wants to the design department, and slow are retunring proofs. The result is an ad with errors, not approved by the cusotmer.

If your expenditures will be moderate, you might be able to afford a graphic designer or advertising agency. It costs nothing to find out, call a few ad agencies in the phone book and ask for an account rep. Explain you may be in the market for an agency and let them ask the questions. A quick determination will not be long in coming.

There is a lot to be said for finding a way for someone else to do your ads so you can use your talents for what you do best, running your business. Designing your own ads (a furniture store I visited had a complete drafting table, magnifying light and glue pot in the corner) is about the same as fixing your own leaks and asking the plumber to come by and inspect it.
